It was my final year at Uni. Majority of my remaining year would be focused on work experience and gaining as much insight into the “real world” before I could graduate. I wanted to be prepared. I wanted to do everything and anything. I didn’t really know what my passion was or even what I really wanted to do when I graduated in 12 months time. I found out about Colosoul Magazine through a friend that volunteered for the publication. Colosoul gave me an opportunity to try something new and see if it fit. The plan was that I would volunteer at Colosoul for three weeks and complete one of my practical units. After that I would find a new work experience position, then another and then another until I figured out what I was interested in pursuing. Colosoul was never intended to be a permanent, long-term placement. It was more of a three week fling that would give me a gentle nudge into the industry.

There is no other magazine or institution like Colosoul – that’s a fact. Perhaps it is the combination of the two that make it so unique, but the idea of the magazine, its vision and its missions separate it from the rest... By creating an avenue for new people trying to contribute, Colosoul ensures that output is fresh and all people have the chance to showcase their abilities when, at times it may be difficult to do so elsewhere. On a community level, this uniquely positions the magazine to work to stimulate positive results.

I was recently involved in a creative project with Colosoul Magazine called MYM - Make Your Move a Theatrical Fashion show. My role in this production was assisting the Editor Tricia Ray in the overall running and production of the show, I was also in charge of designing and visual display of the show. It was a very rewarding experience for someone like myself who is interested in a career within the events management industry. Trish gave alot of responsibility yet this was matched with alot of guidance making the experience one which has taught me alot and prepared me for future endeavours. The only thing I can think of with improvement was it could be planned to be bigger next time as we got such a great response from our audience. It’s extremely important to have experiences like this offered by Colosoul because it prepares one for the work place and to have a chance to be apart of a very competitive and tough industry to break into. Experience like this in Perth is priceless and difficult to come across and what one would learn from such an experience can be carried with them throughout their career.

When I came on at Colosoul and was given the task of organising the Go Local gig I admit I freaked out. I thought maybe my editor had forgotten I was only a student and I was nervous I wouldn’t do a good enough job because let’s be honest – I really didn’t have much of an idea of what I was doing. Fortunately for me Colosoul has a fantastic program which helps everyone doing work experience. The mentorship program is one my editor Trish Ray set up because she knows how tough it is for young people trying to get a start in the media/arts industry. The mentorship program enlists industry professionals to act as a mentor for all of us starting out who could use a helping hand getting started in the industry and it is a program fairly unique to Colosoul. Being part of the Colosoul mentorship program has meant I have had access to the advice of trained professionals to help me with the various tasks I have been given since I started at Colosoul. As well as organising the Go Local gig my music team and I have also been to a lot of the festivals over the summer as well as met with a bunch of cool people that I never would have had the confidence to meet with if I didn’t have someone who already knew what they were doing to help me. As a direct result of being part of the Colosoul mentorship program I know that I have become far more confident and better equipped to join the media/arts industry when I graduate at the end of the year.
